Jazz in the Park

Gathering Point Community Council is getting elderly retired citizens out of the house and onto park grounds at Brown Memorial Park, located on the city’s South Side at 634 E. 86th Street. This free event is the 3rd installment of Gathering Point’s initiative of getting the elderly active and out into the sunny weather.

The Seniors Jazz in the Park is personally one of my favorite events we do, it is always a pleasure to talk and dance with seniors because they offer me their wisdom and life's experiences and give me an added bound a new dance move or two.

GPCC knows how important seniors are to the community and with us being all about Community Relations we know seniors are the backbone of the community, they are the pulse, they are the people active in the community advocating for change.

With this year’s breaking record of shootings, the city of Chicago is on pace of surpassing 2015 shooting toll of 2,988 which currently stands at 2,054. With all the violence it is imperative to lean on our senior citizens for wisdom and information on crime they see taking place in their own communities Wooten believes.

Gathering Point has been instrumental in advocating for the South Side community by being the bridge between Southside organizations and The Chicago Police Department. The Organization recently had a meeting with Superintendent Eddie Johnson, discussing how the community can better assist with reporting crimes and being crime agitators.

The work we do with our seniors in the community keep us afloat and for their dedication and hard work to improving and being vigilant, this event is to show appreciation.

This year’s Jazz in the Park event will mark three years that Gathering Point Community Council has produced this event.

The featured Jazz band is the Jazz Pacers and the event will be from 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM. The event will also feature guest speakers, vendors sharing important information with seniors, and free lunch for the 75 first registered seniors.

Participating vendors will be: The City of Chicago, The Chicago Park District, Blue Cross Blue Shield, At Home Quality Care, Office of the Attorney General, Big Brothers Imagine Englewood, and Great Neighbors.

Last year’s turnout for the event had great participation and this year looks just as promising. The event is open to all ages and all that is required to be an attendance, is bringing a senior!
